PLAY WITH PURPOSE
ABOUT
BASICALLY BETTER
Basically Better Basketball is a program of weekly 75 minute classes focused on teaching basketball fundamentals to kids ages 8 to 13 with little or no basketball experience.
Basically Better is offering classes this fall through the Manhattan Beach Parks & Rec Department. Each class will have a maximum of 10 participants, so your child will get the attention and skill repetition necessary to develop the knowledge and confidence to become a better player.
My name is Seth Keller, and I’m the dad of a Mira Costa 9th grader (pictured) . I played varsity basketball in high school and have coached middle school and high school players.
I started Basically Better Basketball because I was surprised by how few players in the Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball (MBYB) and the Torrance Summer Basketball recreational leagues I coached in this year knew the basics of the game—even as 12 to 14 year-olds.
What I experienced was something that you as parents may have observed from your kids’ experiences in recreational leagues. Each team had a couple really good players who played organized basketball in school or with a club team. There may have been a few others on the team who knew how to play. The rest of the players were running up and down the court trying to figure out what they were supposed to do.
My goal is to make kids who are new to playing organized basketball better by teaching them the fundamentals of the game so they can become more confident and be valuable contributors to their teams.
The Basically Better Basketball motto is “Play With Purpose.” If your kids want to play any type of organized basketball (and want you to pay for it!), they’ll have a lot more fun—and score more points!—if they learn and practice basketball basics.
learn skills to be
a better player
Basically Better Basketball teaches players practical skills to make them better on both offense and defense so they can meaningfully contribute to their teams in games.
Understanding and practicing these fundamentals gives players confidence and gives their teammates confidence in them so they get the ball more often and can make plays when they do.
